The Rats was my gateway to James Herbert's fiction. It's magnificent.

I started up on the Ash series, but my partner has read them all. He has some brilliantly nasty moments - really jaw dropping stuff!

The Magic Cottage is mostly what I would refer to as cozy horror, but there are chapters of sheer grocé out horror!

The fog was good too, more of a King-like exposé of people's reactions.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten I also listened to The Fog as an audiobook - great stuff! Another example of Herbert rolling off many side-character stories to give a sense of scope of the threat.
