it's one of the underpinnings of Lovecraftian cosmic horror – that life on Earth, including humans, are the residue of abandoned experiments by beings far beyond our understanding

Ah! I'd never got that deep into the Lovecraft lore (I've read a fair few of the short stories but I know there's so much more out there). My feeling this was bordering on cosmic horror was right then. Thanks!
